“Homey, take six…and take this…haters” - Kanye West, Stronger Who’s done now?  5 straight US Opens and his 13th Grand Slam.  I don’t fault Federer for losing the French again (that’s Nadal’s surface), and the Wimbledon final was one for the ages, but also one that could have gone either way.  Who knows what would have happened if the sun didn’t set. And don’t tell me that this Grand Slam isn’t legit because he didn’t play Nadal in the final.  He still went through Djokovic and beat the guy who sent Nadal home.  The surface is still too fast for Nadal, as is the Australian.  And Wimbledon is going to be a toss-up between them.  So he still has a better at winner Slams going forward than Nadal.

Federer Rollin’

In a draw that was supposed to be problematic, Federer is into the quarterfinals without having dropped a set.

Federer d. Hrbaty, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

Federer d. Soderling, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6

Federer d. Gicquel, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1

Federer d. Hewitt, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4

He’ll play Mario Ancic in the quarters. He’s the last guy to beat Federer at Wimbledon (6 years ago), but he won’t pose a problem this year. The semis will likely be against Marat Safin or Marcos Baghdatis.

Another showdown with Nadal seems to be inevitable. Nadal’s draw is wide open. It’s going to be a wildly entertaining final, I can’t wait!

People out there are actually doubting Roger Federer because he lost at the Australian Open this year (to Novak Djokovic), and in the French Open final last month (to Rafael Nadal), but anyone who thinks that this is the beginning of the end is sadly mistaken. Federer has literally obliterated his competition over the last five years (5 straight Wimbledons, 4 straight US Opens, before this year 3 straight Australian Opens). Having Djokovic and Nadal nipping at his heels is only going to bring the best out of him. He might lose to them a few times, but he’s gonna figure them out. Sampras had Courier and Agassi and Michael Chang to push him to greatness too. So what if he won’t win 3 Grand Slams every year? He’ll win at least 2 and get to the Finals in the ones where he doesn’t win, because he’s the greatest ever. If he wins 2 a year for the next 4 years, that’ll give him a ridiculous 20 career grand slams. Before Federer, Sampras was considered the best ever and he never won the French. In fact, he only made it to the semi-finals once at Roland-Garros. Federer has made it to the French Open final the last THREE years. If it wasn’t for Nadal’s out-of-this-world dominance on clay, Federer would have already completed the career grand-slam (not to mention a few calendar grand-slams) and surpassed Sampras for total grand-slam victories (Sampras has 14 to Federer’s 12). So, chink in the armor? Maybe. But the end of Federer’s dominance? Not by a long shot. The only reason we’re even talking about this is because he’s redefined what “dominance” even means in tennis. Prediction: I think he’s gonna shut up his critics with an amazing Wimbledon, only dropping 2 sets entering the semi-finals, where he’ll dispatch Djokovic in 4 sets and then win a grueling final against Nadal in 5 sets.
